OUR TRIP to MALAGA

JULY 2008

We arrived from New York (direct, non-stop DELTA flight 162) in the afternoon of July 8th.

While the MUSICA NUEVA MALAGA Festival will be held July 18-26 in the town of FRIGILIANA (some 50 Km NE of Malaga) in the province of ANDALUSIA, Spain, we decided to rent a nice beach-apartment in the nearby town of NERJA (pronounced NERHHA), 6 KM South of Frigiliana, on the COSTA DEL SOL.

Our apartment is ½ block from the best beach in the area, The Burriana Beach (see below the view from our terrace). The apartment has two bedrooms, wonderfully furnished !

The boardwalk is passing in front of lots of Mediterranean style houses, hotels, restaurants, and lots of cheap stuff (but expensiveÉ) stores.

Nerja is surrounded by the SIERRA NEVADA Mountains. There are lots of villas overlooking the sea in the nearby hills, one nicer that the other. Most of the  owners are wealthy Spaniards (some of which are members of Emil SeinŐs School Band, as well as many British, French, Danish, Swedish and German families.

Different view of the piazza at the base of the Frigiliana town (population 2900 + ca. 300 or more tourists most of the year.

This is a warm climate, perhaps subtropical weather (it is just ca. 180 Km North of the African continent. There are lots of palm trees, mango and orange trees as well.

See below two pictures from the interior of this very wornderful building, which houses a library, lecture rooms, computer rooms, etc.

The town of Frigiliana presents several events annually, dedicated to the three cultures still evident in the region, Christian, Jewish and Moslem.  The FRIGILIANA 3 CULTURE festival brings musicians, dancers, and artists from all over the world to emphasize the new openness and interest of the local people.

It is good to know that before the Inquisition, the three communities lived in peace together.  Lots of the Greek knowledge of the Classical times passed to the Medieval Europe through this region. The Sylvester II Pope learned the three languages, along with Mathematics, Music, Philosophy of the Moors and Jews, before becoming one of the progressive popes of the 10-11th Century. There were lots of translations of the Greek literature, Philosophy, Mathematics, Astronomy, Music, from Greek to Arabic, to Yiddish and Latin languages, thus triggering the period of Renaissance.

Our first meeting with Emil SeinŐs family and Francesco, the mayor of Frigiliana, a tuba player in EmilŐs local band !!!
